I'm currently trying to stop using the word "like" incorrectly when I talk to people.

I often use like and um as filler words when I'm talking to people. For some reason, me (and a lot of other people, guys and girls) are uncomfortable with pauses in conversation, so they use like, you know, um or uh to fill the space. I use like ALL THE TIME and it makes me sound really, really stupid.

In my PR campaigns class the professor will ream you if you use like incorrectly, and it's pretty embarrassing. I don't use it incorrectly when I'm writing, so there's absolutely no reason for me to use it incorrectly when I'm talking to people. And I can't even imagine what would happen if I spoke like that during a job interview. They'd be ready for the next candidate in 30 seconds.

I think I've gotten better at it, I've started to notice it every time I do it, and I've asked my friends to help me out. Hopefully I'll have it purged from my verbal vocabulary by the end of the semester.

Also, I have laryngitis which really sucks because I'm a talker and now I can't say anything. I also have a fever so I didn't go intern today. Unfortunately, if you miss a day due to illness you have to get a doctor's excuse. I hate getting doctor's excuses because I have a 20 dollar co-pay. So, basically, I'm paying 20 bucks for an excuse, since I already know I have laryngitis and I know there's nothing you can get prescribed to make it better.

Stupid rules.

I realized that I started using "Like" because all of the people I lived with used it, and between mocking them and having to use it to be understood... :(

I use the word "like" quite a lot too. recently I've been working to try and stop, but I find myself using it ... only after it's too late and I've already used it. I hate the doctor's office too so I feel your pain there.

I'm a talker too, so when I lose my voice it drives me crazy. get better soon!

Your post has made me realize that I switch between modes of speaking when I talk to different people... :P

writing and talking
You know, most people write differently from they way they talk. If I wrote the way I talked, I would be a horrible writer! It's good that you noticed your wording problem and are trying to stop it--our teacher at school makes us give speeches and corrects us as to whether we talk wrong or have extra movement--signs of nervousness and half of the students didn't even realize they were moving! Its subconscious.

Peace

I outlined my plan in one of my old posts, where if I couldn't replace "like" with "similiar to" or "as if", then I wasn't allowed to use it. Brain doesn't keep up with mouth, so like, you know, like yeah!. I totally heard a conversation of such calibre the other day.

Ahaha
In sixth grade, I had a teacher who forbade us from saying "yeah." It had to be "yes" or he would scold us with his booming voice. He was awesome though so that made it ok.

I can never get away from phrases similar to "and then she's like..." Those kind of things. It's hopeless, it just comes naturally...when I read it it just sounds like something a dumb valley girl would say, but then I realize with horror that those were actually my words....

It doesn't sound as stupid when I say it, I promise! *cries*

Get well soon! Not being able to talk sucks. Now I know that laryngitis most probably is the medical term for the temporary loss of voice.
» Nuttz on 2008-02-09 03:30:33

Yeah I hate that too.
I didnt have health insurance once so I showed up with the flu and they sent me home lol.

I use like wrong more when I blog than, like any other time LOL : P

bleh.
my place of work isn't strict with that. You just call in and say you are sick, they know you're not gonna show, so they'll try to get someone else to come in and cover your shift.

Indeed I am! And I've been through the same thing once, kinda, only I didn't use "like" too much, I just paused too much while talking, which made me look pretty dumb. It's better now though, I think.
